Alabama sun turns a slide into a hazard by ten in the morning. Shade is what keeps a playground usable in July, and it is the single upgrade that gets used the most and gets asked about the least until the first hot week. We sell, engineer and install fabric shade, steel shade and shelters across north Alabama out of our shop in Cullman.
The shade shapes we build
Shape is not decoration. It decides where the posts land, how much clear play area you keep, and how the water sheds.
Cantilever
All posts on one side, so the covered area is completely open underneath. The right answer over a playground, because nothing lands inside the use zone. Single and double sided.
Hip and full cantilever runs
Long rectangles that follow a bleacher line, a queue, a walkway or a drop off lane. Sections join end to end to cover as much length as you need.
Single post umbrella
One center post, square or hexagonal top. Good over a sandbox, a picnic table, a splash pad feature or a small toddler area where you can give up the middle.
Sail shade
Three or four anchor points at different heights. The look most people picture when they say shade sail. Best on open lawn and gathering space rather than tight over equipment.
Pyramid and multi pyramid
Four corner posts with a peaked top, joined in a run for very large areas. Sheds water well and covers more square feet per dollar than any other shape.
Steel roof shelters
Standing seam or shingled metal on steel columns. Rain protection, not just sun, for pavilions, dugouts, bus stops and concession areas. Stays up through winter.
Shade has to reach past the equipment
The mistake we see most often is a canopy sized to the footprint of the playstructure. The sun is only straight overhead for a short part of the day. For the rest of it the shadow slides, and a canopy that exactly matches the structure leaves the slide exit and the deck in full sun by mid afternoon.
The working rule is to run the fabric well past the equipment on the south and west sides and to lift the posts high enough that the shadow stays on the play area instead of the mulch beyond it. When we lay out a job we look at where the equipment sits, which way the site faces and what time of day the space actually gets used, and we size from that. A school that uses the playground at 10 in the morning needs a different overhang than a church that uses it at 4 in the afternoon.

Fabric, posts and what actually lasts
The fabric
Knitted high density polyethylene, not vinyl. It breathes, so heat rises through it instead of pooling underneath, and it does not flap and tear the way a solid sheet does. Fabric warranties from the mills we buy from generally run 10 years against UV degradation.
The steel
Posts are typically 4 to 8 inch schedule steel depending on span and wind zone, powder coated after fabrication. Structural warranties on the frame commonly run 15 years or longer. We will send you the actual warranty sheet for whatever you are looking at.
The stitching and cables
Where these fail is at the corners. Look for reinforced corner patches, stainless hardware and a cable through the perimeter hem rather than fabric clamped straight to the frame. That is what we spec.
Colors
Fabric comes in a wide range and schools usually match team colors. Darker colors block slightly more UV and read cooler underneath. Lighter colors stay cleaner looking longer. Both are the same fabric.
Wind, snow and the part that matters for permits
A shade structure is a permanent structure with a big sail attached to it, which means it has to be engineered for the wind speed your county requires and, further north, for snow load. Our manufacturers provide sealed engineering drawings for the state you are building in, and those drawings are what the building department wants to see. We supply them with the quote so nothing stalls at the counter.
Fabric tops are designed to be taken down. Most owners unhook them in late fall and put them back in spring, which takes a couple of people an afternoon and takes the snow and ice question off the table entirely. Steel roof shelters stay up year round.

- Quote and engineeringYou get a firm price plus the sealed drawings for your jurisdiction. Purchase orders are welcome from schools, churches and municipalities.
- FootingsConcrete footings go in first and cure. Depth and diameter come from the engineering, not from a rule of thumb.
- Steel and fabricFrame goes up, then the fabric is tensioned. A single cantilever is usually a one day install once footings are cured.
